Symptoms
After applying patches you see that automatic updating is enabled for certain products such as Adobe, Sun Microsystems, Skype Limited, Oracle, RealNetworks, Inc., RealPlayer, Flash, Flash Player, Java, Skype, etc.
Cause
Some vendor updates will enable the automatic updating of the product being updated during patch installation.
Resolution
We reference the original vendor installation file in our SCUPdates updates. We do not re-distribute the update files directly, and are unable to re-package them.
If a vendor automatically enables the updating of their product during the installation of their update, we cannot alter this.
If the vendor has provided a command line switch (in the case of an 'EXE' file) or a name/value pair (in the case of either an 'MSI' or 'MSP' file) which disables the automatic updating feature during the installation, this can be specified within the update (via SCUP) prior to publication, at your own risk. In many cases, the vendor does not provide this mechanism.
It is also an option to utilize a mechanism (such as a Powershell script) post-installation to disable automatic updating across your particular environment. We use such a method within our Shavlik Protect product (via Powershell 'ITscripts'). Further details regarding our scripting method (including the script contents) can be located here:
